Atticall

Atticall village and townland is in the Parish of Kilkeel, Barony of Moume Western Half, Co. Down. It is situated four miles north of the fishing port of Kilkeel in the shadow of the Moume Mountains.

At various times in the past the name Atticall was recorded as Anty Caell, Antecall. The name probaly has its origins in the Gaelic (Ait Ti Chathail) meaning Cathal's Dwelling Place.

To-day Bog Rd., Livens Rd., Island Rd., & Atticall Rd. run through the townland.

In 1305 Atticall in the ancient Kingdom of Moume was in the hands of the Anglo-Norman Richard de Burgh (the Red Earl) In 1505 it was granted to Gerald 8th Earl of Kildare. More recently those attached to Kilmorey Estate hold the title Earl of Kilmorey.
